Render a Rhino 3DM file — no Rhino needed
3DM is the native format of Rhino, and of the jewellery tools built on it — MatrixGold, RhinoGold, Panther. Rendermio reads .3dm files directly in your browser, without a Rhino licence, and can place the stones exactly where the designer put them.
How Rendermio reads Rhino 3DM
Accepted as .3dm. 3DM is read by rhino3dm, McNeel's own library compiled to WebAssembly, so the parser is the one Rhino itself uses. Layers become parts. And one thing no other format offers: a jewellery 3DM usually records where each stone sits as an object even when the file carries no stone meshes at all, and Rendermio reads those positions to set real gems in exactly those seats — the 'From .3dm' button in the Stones step. An STL of the same design has lost that entirely.

What does not
- Rhino materials and Rhino's own render settings — those are Rhino's, not the file's geometry; you choose gold and diamond in the studio
- Objects Rhino could not mesh — a very old or damaged .3dm may need saving again from a current Rhino
Exporting Rhino 3DM from your CAD program
- Keep stones on their own layer; the studio finds them faster and the exact-position import is cleaner
- Save from Rhino 6 or later — the browser parser handles older files but the newest write cleaner meshes
- If the file is huge, export only the objects you want rendered to a new .3dm

Then what happens
Once the file is in, the steps are the same for every format: tell the studio what the object is, and it dresses it — one click finds the stones in a ring and makes the rest gold. Pick a Look, which sets lighting, backdrop, pose and camera together. Export a listing pack up to 8K or a 360° turntable video. Everything runs on your own GPU; the file never leaves the page.

Can I open a .3dm file without Rhino?
Yes. Rendermio reads .3dm in the browser with rhino3dm, McNeel's own library compiled to WebAssembly, so no Rhino licence or install is needed and the file is never uploaded.
My jeweller's 3DM has no stones in it — can I still render them?
Usually, yes. Jewellery 3DM files often record each stone's position and size as an object even when no stone mesh was saved. Rendermio reads those and places real ray-traced gems in exactly those seats. This is the one thing a 3DM can do that an STL of the same ring cannot.
Is 3DM better than STEP for jewellery rendering?
For a ring with stones, yes — because of the stone positions. For metal-only pieces they render alike. If you have both, use the 3DM for the stones and you lose nothing on the metal.
